Sony
released the EX1 to the masses and gave independent filmmakers
and budget-conscience HDTV videographers/producers
alike
access to a high definition
camera that rivals ones costing triple the amount. The image
resolution, low light sensitivity and sheer
flexibility of the Sony
PMW-EX1 is astounding. Which shouldn't be surprising seeing as it was
developed by
Sony's high-end
CineAlta
division, the same team that brought us the F900.
When first seeing footage from the Sony
PMW-EX1 many say to themselves "Am I looking through a window or at my
TV screen?"
Michael Mann's new movie "Public Enemies" used the EX1 for shots alongside the $100K+ Sony F23.
The Olympics*, the Discovery Channel*, TNT* and even the men who shot
Michael Jackson's "This Is It" harness the
power of the EX1.
Discovery approved the EX series for Silver status. Meaning all but
their high HIGH end shows can use it for 100% footage acquisition.
Yes, it really is that good and it's considered
the workhorse camera in its price range. Lowlight, slow motion, 10bit 4:2:2 HD-SDI,
24p, 30p, 60p, 60i, tapeless....the EX1 does it all except change your car's oil.
Check out some clips from EX-1 users

in use?

If
you want the ultimate in video quality for your video/indy film project
but do not have millions to spend this camera is it. And this is
the
place to rent it if you're in the Baltimore or D.C. area

- 1080/24p, 1080/60i, 1080/30p, 720/24p, 720/60p and European PAL frame

- 1/2" true progressive CMOS image sensors for clean footage in low light
situations and easier shallow focus imagery than typical
1/3" image
sensors

be set to autofocus or fully manual, repeatable focus with
infinity to macro stops. There is a real iris ring and the zoom can be

this
page on Creative COW for the break down.

-
Variable frame rates . Give your productions REAL slow motion
with overcranking or speed it up with undercranking...it's your choice
- SxS Memory cards. A completely tapeless workflow saves money on tapes
and time on capturing during post-production. 8GB cards
have
at least 25 minutes of recording time in high quality mode and 16GB can
record at least 50 minutes at the highest quality setting. If
your
need longer recording times the cards hold 35 minutes with 8GB and 70
minutes with a 16GB card at the lower quality SP setting.
- The HD LCD screen that has excellent color rendition and is
high resolution enough to focus without an external monitor!
- TRUE 10-bit 4:2:2 HD-SDI live video output with embedded audio ...great for
green screen work
(although the HQ mode is adequate
see
this
video as an example), but if you want the ultimate in quality
from this camera then HD-SDI is it!)

Sennheiser
EW100ENG G2 Wireless Microphone Kit - $75/day or
$225/weekly

Sennheiser makes some of the best wireless systems around. With its Evolution G2 system they really upped the ante in terms of
range (up to 150 feet), quality (HDX
technology, keeping noise/hiss levels low) and RF interference rejection. The EW100ENG kit allows wireless
recording
in virtually any situation.
This kit features a Sennheiser ME-2 lavalier clip-on microphone, SK100
bodypack transmitter, SKP100 plug-on transmitter
that works with any
dynamic microphone (we have a few dynamic mics you can rent), and an EK100 camera receiver with both
XLR cable and 1/8" cable out as well as a shoemount for easy mounting on most cameras, both professional and consumer.
You can
manually tune to 1440 UHF frequencies or autoscan for available
frequencies and store your selections in
nine banks with four presets
each. Your settings stay stored even after you take the batteries out!
Backlit displays help for low light changing of settings and a pilot
tone squelch eliminates RF interence if the receiver loses
its signal.
Everything also has a nifty lock function to avoid accidental changing
of settings. And last but not least the
transmitters/receiver run for a minimum of 8 hours off 2 AA batteries!
Our EW100ENG wireless kit meets the new 2009 FCC mandates as it falls within the 626-662MHz spectrum.
Sennheiser MKE-2 Gold lavalier microphone for wireless (3.5mm connector) - $30/day or
$75/weekly
The wireless kit comes with the ME2 microphone which is decent and can fulfill most client's needs. But
if you want/demand the ultimate in wireless audio quality then this add-on is a must! The MKE2 is the
mic that Broadway uses because it is high quality and can withstand the abuse from talent night after night.
And perhaps just as importantly, it is easily concealed.
Omni-directional, flat frequency response and discrete. What more could you want?
Sanken
COS-11sBP
Wired Lavalier Microphone - $30/day or
$75/weekly
Listen to a sample
raw audio clip of the Sanken COS-11s.
Described
as "sounding like a boom mic" so if grabbing great audio for the human
voice in a discrete way is your aim (see
the photo with the
dime and a quarter as comparisons) then
the
Sanken COS-11 is for you. It's powered by a AA battery or
48v Phantom
Power from the EX-1 or many other professional video cameras/audio mixers.
Comer CM-LBPS1800 Deluxe on-camera LED Light - $30/day or $100/weekly

A professional powerful low consumption 10-LED on-camera
light. It has a solid sturdy
built with barn doors and filters to provide
maximum flexibilty for shooting in different lighting environment.
It's brighter than a Litepanels' Miniplus and a barely perceptible hot
spot. Built-in diffused CTO filter, dimmer, two batteries for
a full day of shooting, charger (AC/DC and car cigarette lighter
cables) plus a few accessories for mounting on different things.
Comer is the company who makes the Sony HVL-LBP light. The LBPS1800 is similar but much better in many respects.
5 in 1 Collapsible Reflector (43") - $15/day
or
$30/weekly

This multi-sided reflector features white, silver, gold, translucent, and black. These are
always great to have on shoots to augment light.
ExpoDisc Neutral 77mm - $15/day
or
$30/weekly
Stop crossing your fingers and hoping that you'll get a good exposure. NAIL your exposure every time with the ExpoDisc.
The ExpoDisc is marketed as a white balance reference which it is great at but its original purpose (and where it
got its name) is to obtain a spot-on exposure. It turns virtually any
video or still camera into an incident light meter and from our
experience we wouldn't leave home without it. It replaces a typical 18% gray card.
In combination with the WarmCards system below you'll have a complete set for professional exposure and white balance. But if
you can only budget for one we recommend the ExpoDisc.
WarmCards Complete 2.0 $10/day
or
$30/weekly
WarmCards
will give the EX-1 (or whatever camera you use it with) consistent
white
balance. Stop relying on a piece of
printer paper that may not be
true "video white" to achieve white balance. Warm
cards are specially
designed
to not just give you proper white balance but to warm your
video footage up a bit at your choosing. You'll get Warm 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2,
3,
Minus Green (to
counter the green color cast that flourescent lights give off) and Cool
Cards
1 and 2. On the back of every
WarmCard is neutral, 100IRE video white
if you do
not want to warm up your footage. These cards save A LOT of
post-production time.
Along with the ExpoDisc you'll obtain professional results while shooting which is invaluable.
Sony MDR-7506
Headphones: $10/day or
$35/weekly
These
are THE production headphones to use. Most sound guys use them for
their great self-amplification and the frequency
range they're tuned into
for picking up any bad audio. Plus they are durable and fold up neatly for storage.
